12 Scriptures of Love and Support For Parents and Seniors

Did you know that 1 in 3 Americans is now 50 years of age or older, and many are also taking care of an older parent or relative.  Honoring the wisdom of the elders is central to our faith: it’s what the Bible is all about! On westa.org, we take the time to honor our parents, elders, and caregivers with the following list of scriptures and resources.

Exodus 20:12 – Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

Psalm 71:18 – Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.

Psalm 92:12-15 – The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13 planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, 15 proclaiming, “The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”

Proverbs 23:22 – Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Proverbs 17:6 – Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.

Ecclesiastes 12:1-7 – Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them”— 2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain; 3 when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men stoop, when the grinders cease because they are few, and those looking through the windows grow dim; 4 when the doors to the street are closed and the sound of grinding fades; when people rise up at the sound of birds, but all their songs grow faint; 5 when people are afraid of heights and of dangers in the streets; when the almond tree blossoms and the grasshopper drags itself along and desire no longer is stirred. Then people go to their eternal home and mourners go about the streets. 6 Remember him—before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well, 7 and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

Isaiah 46:3-4 –“Listen to me, you descendants of Jacob, all the remnant of the people of Israel, you whom I have upheld since your birth, and have carried since you were born. 4 Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 –  Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

1 Timothy 5:1-3 – Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity. 3 Honor widows who are truly widows.

1 Peter 5:5-6 ESV – Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Leviticus 19:32 ESV – You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.
