Wednesday was a historic day in the sports world, as several professional teams chose to boycott their games in an effort to protest the shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, Milwaukee on Aug. 23.

Blake – an unarmed Black man – was shot seven times in the back and tased by police officers, and according to his family, he is currently paralyzed from the waist down.

The shooting is currently under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, and at the time of the shooting, Blake’s three sons were in the car.

The first team to boycott play on Wednesday was the Milwaukee Bucks, who were taking on the Orlando Magic in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference first round playoff series.

Shortly after, the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder decided to cancel their Game 5 matchup for Wednesday, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers, who also decided not to play.

It is yet to be determined if the NBA playoffs will continue on Thursday.

The boycott stretched beyond the NBA, as several Major League Baseball teams decided not to play as well, including the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners, which has the most Black players of any MLB team.

The WNBA also decided to cancel all of its games on Wednesday, as did Major League Soccer.
